This globe, made around 1870 and distributed by the Hachette & Cie bookshop, then located at 77 boulevard Saint-Germain, illustrates the rise of geography in the XIXᵉ century.
Designed after the work of Louis Vivien de Saint-Martin (1802-1896), it testifies to a desire to make the world legible and accessible.
Mounted on a turned base of blackened wood and encircled by a graduated brass meridian, the object combines scientific precision and handcrafted elegance.
It remains today a precious witness to the geographical knowledge of its time and the major role of publishers in the dissemination of knowledge
