He studied at the Beaux-Arts d'Angers, and moved to Paris in 1886, where he frequented Léon Bonnat's studio. His encounters with artists such as Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir had a profound influence on his approach to light and color.
Bonnat (official portrait painter of the Third Republic) would describe him as a very brilliant draftsman.
