Companionship Porcelain Pill Box Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Small round porcelain box with hand-painted decoration and gilded highlights. Brass mount. The reverse bears a mark consisting of three blue dots. The central design depicts a geometric arrangement of tools and symbols associated with the world of the guilds and the carpentry trade, accompanied by the inscriptions:
‘Compagnons passants charpentiers’ and ‘Bons drilles de Tours’.
The expression “Bons Drilles de Tours” likely refers to the nickname given to the Carpenters’ Companions of the Soubise Rite of the Third Estate.
Inside the box, the lid bears the inscription: “Villefranche la Liberté”. On the base of the box, the mark of the three small blue dots is also visible.
The item is part of the tradition of fraternity objects associated with French journeymen’s guilds and bears witness to the symbolic culture and identity of the Compagnons du Tour de France.
