The finesse of the casting, the quality of the anatomical modelling and the beautiful nuanced patina testify to a meticulous production destined for a cultivated and demanding clientele.
The original, known as the Apollo of Belvedere, is a Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze attributed to Leochares (4th century BC). Rediscovered during the Renaissance, it became one of Europe's most admired masterpieces, and for several centuries was considered the supreme embodiment of ideal ancient beauty. Installed in the Vatican, it inspired artists, sculptors and travelers on the Grand Tour.
