Louis-Émile Minet (1841-1923)
A Rouen painter deeply attached to Normandy, Louis-Émile Minet established himself from the 1870s as one of the best interpreters of rural life and Seine landscapes. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, then influenced by landscape artist César de Cock, he developed a sensitive, precise and warm style of writing, nourished by direct observation of the motif.
Minet debuted at the Paris Salon in 1876, won an honorable mention in 1882, and enjoyed real success with canvases that have become emblematic: Les Foins à Saint-Aubin, La Levée des nasses, La Pêche à la violette or Le Retour des moissonneurs presented at the 1888 Salon. His scenes of the banks of the Seine, harvests, fishing and peasant life seduce with their authenticity, sense of movement and soft Norman light.
Recognized by his peers, Minet was elected to the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Rouen in 1917 and became curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen until 1922. His works found their way into a number of public collections, including those in Rouen, Elbeuf, Blois and Bernay.
Today, Louis-Émile Minet's paintings appeal to collectors for their timeless charm, heritage value and ability to accurately render the poetry of everyday life in Normandy. His works are a sure bet for any collection dedicated to regional painters, rural scenes or artists of the Rouen school.
