The painting is part of a series that includes at least one other work available in our exhibition, also depicting the life of Jesus. This is a work in which Varotti demonstrates his skill in conceiving monochrome sketches, even though in this case he uses color, which serves to give strength to the drawing and make the subject more appealing to a patron who, in all likelihood, did not intend to reproduce the artist’s work on a large scale.
