Great 17th-century Italian Painting, Madonna Of Sorrows With Angels
An important 17th-century religious painting. Oil on canvas artwork depicting the Virgin of Sorrows at the Cross on Calvary, surrounded by angels bearing the instruments of Christ's Passion, such as the crown of thorns and nails. At the bottom, the skull completes the iconographic interpretation, as Golgotha literally means "place of the skull."
The solemn and theatrical composition unfolds around the strong vertical axis of the Cross, while the figure of the Virgin, wrapped in a blue cloak and pink robe, surrenders to a gesture of intense emotional participation. The angels, arranged in a refined scenographic manner, introduce a note of luminous grace and dynamism, typical of central and northern Italian painting of the second half of the 17th century.
Of particular interest is the presence, at the bottom left, of a coat of arms with a double-headed eagle, an element suggesting an aristocratic commission for a large noble residence.
A monumental painting of remarkable pictorial quality, ideal for a large room, a staircase, a private chapel, or a formal space. A beautifully decorated 20th-century gilded wooden frame shows some signs of age. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in some areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 228 x W 155 cm.
