Joseph Émile Palmero (b. 1870, active until 1942)

Gabriel Ferrier's studio, École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, 1908
Oil on canvas signed and dated lower left
114x76 cm

This large, beautiful studio scene depicts a life drawing session in Gabriel Ferrier's prestigious studio at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, located at 14 rue Bonaparte, quai Malaquais. In the center of the composition, a nude male model, seen from behind, poses on a platform, while students, seated at their easels, practice the study of the human figure, the foundation of academic teaching.

The canvas is signed and dated "E. Palmero, 1908" and can be attributed to Joseph Émile Palmero, born in 1870, a pupil of Gabriel Ferrier since his admission to the studio in 1906. A member of the Artistes Français, he notably exhibited a painting entitled Semaine à l'Antique at Gabriel Ferrier's studio, directly related to this same subject, confirming his interest in depicting Parisian academic life.

Gabriel Ferrier (1847-1914), Prix de Rome in 1872, professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, was appointed chef d'atelier in 1904 before being elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1906. He succeeded to the great tradition of the official painting studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, one of the most influential masters of French academism. Ferrier took over one of the École's most prestigious workshops, designed to train artists for the official Salon and the Prix de Rome (See photo it the studio in 1900).
His students included such important figures as François-Maurice Roganeau (1883-1974), future official painter to the French Navy; Paul-Émile Bécat (1885-1960), famous engraver and illustrator; Roger Bissière (1886-1964), who was to become one of the leading figures in modern French painting; Maurice Bouviolle (1893-1971), winner of the Prix de Rome; Jules Ronsin (1867-1937), a renowned painter and decorator; and Albert Lynch (1851-1912), a worldly portraitist and Salons medalist. These artists may appear on the canvas

This composition thus possesses genuine documentary interest: Palmero here depicts the very interior of his master's studio, a direct heir to Gérôme's teaching, and not just an imaginary genre scene. It bears witness to the life of the great Parisian studios.

The brushwork is free and luminous, with a beautiful studio atmosphere and a particularly lively composition.
A rare work for its subject, at once decorative, historical and emblematic of Belle Époque artistic education.
