Robert Simon was a French figurative painter born in 1889. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français, as well as at the Salon d'automne.
His work, which includes intimate studio scenes, vigorous landscapes and expressive portraits, is perfectly representative of the Nouvelle peinture current, the post-impressionist movement that characterized French painting between the wars. Like Charles Picart Le Doux and Philippe Hauchecorne, he uses a free, energetic touch to treat his subjects. His aim is to give a faithful representation of reality, without artificial mannerism. His deliberately muted palette gives his paintings a delicate, often dreamy tone.
Robert Simon has set up his studio in Villiers-sur-Morin. It was here that he painted all his life, with the exception of the trips he took to recharge his inspiration.
Robert Simon died in 1961. Art critic Claude Roger Marx wrote his obituary in Le Figaro.
