Born in 1889 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Franz Van Montfort was the son of Alphonse Van Montfort, a renowned Belgian artist who had decorated the grand hall of the Hôtel Métropole. From childhood, young Franz knew he wanted to become a painter like his father and, at the age of 16, entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where for four years he mingled with numerous artists and their studios, including Emile Fabry, Herman Richir, Fernand Khnopff, Constant Montald, and Jean Delville, a leading figure in Belgian sculpture and painting. Franz Van Montfort traveled extensively throughout Europe and discovered Italy. Inspired by the beauty of Venice and Florence, he met and married the young Cécile Milbauer, who brought him stability and confidence in his work.
