Strassburg: A Silver Gilt Goblet With Handles By Daniel Harnister, 1660-1665
Artist: Harnister
- Goblet with handles
- Silver gilded, hammered and repoussé, casted (handles)
- Daniel Harnister (Harnischter), master goldsmith received in Strasbourg in 1656, still listed in 1690
- Strassburg, circa 1660-1665
- Height : 5cm; length: 12.4 cm; width (at handles): 11.4cm; Weight:54 g
- Very good condition, some wear to the vermeil
- The oval polylobed goblet, without foot, in gilt silver with a cut-out upper rim decorated in the background with a flower decoration with stem and leaves. The side is adorned with heart-shaped alternating with an amati background. The two long sides feature two scrolled handles. These bowls are typical of Germanic production of the second half of the 17th century.
- Its uses are debated either for serving wine at weddings or as a "drageoir" (Hans Haug). Made by one of the most eminent silversmiths of the period, Daniel Harnister, whose surviving body of work remains substantial. Promoter of floral ornamentation, Harnister seems to have been inspired by the prints distributed by the period's draftsmen, including those by Johann Conrad Reütimann, a silversmith and engraver from Augsburg.
