Vincent Ambrosini Painting Landscape Moonlight On The Gulf Nocturnal Marine Provençale
Moonlight on the Gulf, Provencal nocturnal marine circa 1930 by Vincent Ambrosini
Oil on canvas signed lower right Vincent Ambrosini, a marine and landscape painter known for his night views and Mediterranean moonlight. The results consulted confirm this specialty: nocturnal landscapes, moonlit seascapes, views of Ajaccio, Corsica or the Mediterranean.
The composition most certainly evokes a Provencal or Mediterranean view: a silent gulf under the night, in the distance the lights of the port are evoked, crossed by lunar lighting. The moon, veiled by green and bluish clouds, opens a clear hole in the sky; its reflection descends onto the sea in a vibrant, silvery column, making the surface legible despite the darkness. Ambrosini succeeds here in keeping a delicate pictorial promise: to make a night scene a nuanced image, deep, but never closed.
Beautiful pictorial touch the construction is limpid, horizon , dominant sky, vertical reflection that gives the canvas its full breath, that of a calm Mediterranean sea at night.
