Mid-century Italian Murano Glass 'rostrato' Chandelier By Barovier
Artist: Barovier & Toso
An amazing large 'Rostrato' chandelier with 6 clear Murano glass arms by Barovier & Toso.
This chandelier is an iconic piece of Italian design, defined by a unique glassmaking technique invented in 1938 by Ercole Barovier: The Rostrato Technique. This artisanal technique is performed while the glass is still in a molten state. The glassblower manually pulls small, sharp points (prisms) from the surface of the glass using flat pliers. This creates a complex, diamond-like texture that infinitely refracts and reflects light, resulting in a brilliant "jewel-like" effect.
Barovier & Toso is based on the island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon and is one of the oldest glassmaking families in the world. All their products are still handcrafted there according to centuries-old traditions.
