Pewter Alcohol Measuring Jug - Avallon (bourgogne), 18th Century

Artist: Etienne Sergent

EXCEPTIONAL very small pewter alcohol PICHET, truncated cone shape, molded straight throat and thumb rest handle.
Mark of Etienne SERGENT received master in 1769: crowned hammer / E.S / 1769.
Height: 7.9 cm.
AVALLON, Last third of the 18th century

In perfect condition and of an unknown truncated cone typology for this Burgundian center. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only pitcher listed to date for both this center and Burgundy.
These pitchers were the wine and alcohol measures of the Ancien Régime, the large gauges intended for wine, the very small ones for spirits.Low gauge: 51 milliliters
Low gauge at bottom of beaker: 43 milliliters
Gauge corresponding to that used in CLAMECY
Bibliography:
"Pewter pottery in Burgundy" by Roger Verdier and Daniel Allix
"Les pichets d'étain" by Charles Boucaud
