Neoclassical Style Brass Coffee Table With Chinoiserie Lacquer Top, Attributed To Maison Jansen

Artist: Maison Jansen

This rectangular coffee table illustrates the masterful meeting of rigorous neoclassical architecture and Far Eastern exoticism. The chassis rests on four solid brass uprights detailed with fine fluting, terminating at the base in delicate "toupie" (spinning top) feet. The stability and elegance of the structure are ensured by a slender X-shaped floor stretcher, secured at its center by a ringed rosette. The top of the frame forms a strict brass rim enclosing a heavy lacquered wood top. Set against a deep black background, this top displays rich Chinoiserie scenes (animated landscapes, pavilions, and floral motifs) executed in golden and coppery tones.

The combination of architectural brass and lacquer panels (often salvaged from antique Coromandel lacquer folding screens or custom-commissioned) is one of the unmistakable signatures of Maison Jansen in the mid-20th century. Founded in Paris in 1880, this international decorating firm became famous for furnishing the global elite (from the Windsors to the White House). Under the direction of Stéphane Boudin, Jansen brilliantly reinvented the Directoire and Louis XVI styles by blending them with exotic touches, thus creating highly sought-after occasional furniture pieces embraced by the Hollywood Regency movement.

Condition report: Good overall condition. The brass structure displays a natural and even patina of use, with minute traces of oxidation inherent to its age. The lacquered top shows normal signs of wear (surface micro-scratches and slight rubbing) without major lacquer loss, testifying to its historical use. This sculptural and timeless piece will authoritatively anchor the central space of a demanding living room.
