Giancarlo Cori, "Buonconte da Montefeltro," signed, 1984
Artist: Giancarlo Cori
Title: "Buonconte da Montefeltro"
Year: 1984
Medium: Oil on canvas
Inscriptions: Signed and dated "CORI 84" lower right; signed and titled on the reverse of the canvas.
This imposing 1984 canvas represents a pinnacle of Giancarlo Cori’s artistic vision, as he engages here in a refined reinterpretation of Dante’s theme. The work depicts the tragic end of Buonconte da Montefeltro (Purgatory, Canto V), who fell in the Battle of Campaldino and whose body was swept away by the waters of the Archiano River.
The composition is dominated by a suspended, visionary atmosphere, typical of the Ferrara metaphysical school. In a desolate, barren landscape, marked by skeletal tree trunks emerging like claws from the arid ground, lies the contorted, horizontal figure of Buonconte. Above him, on the left, rises a spectral figure, an ethereal and diaphanous entity in the form of a shroud observing the scene, personifying the conflict between the angel and the demon for possession of the warrior’s soul.
