Egypt: Predynastic Arrowhead From Abydos - Box And 19th Century Label Jacques De Morgan
Predynastic arrowhead from Abydos in yellow flint.
Arrowhead: 59 x 38.8 x 9.2 mm.
This point is preserved in a 19th-century blackened wood box threaded with brass, the lid features a thick beveled glass pane, the bottom lined with purple fabric.
A period label bears the inscription:"Abydos - Souvenir d'Egypte - Fouilles de M. De Morgan en 1896".
Important provenance and date when you consider that 1896 is regarded as the birth date of Egyptian prehistory as a discipline, and that it was thanks to Jacques de Morgan (1857-1924), a famous French archaeologist, who took a particular interest in the prehistoric stone tools he found during his prospecting. It was certainly during his excavations at Nagada, one of the largest Predynastic sites, that he found this point and offered it as a souvenir to its owner, who had a custom-made case made.
.Moving object with a very fine provenance.
