Emile Wauters, born in Brussels, was a pupil of Jean-François Portaels at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1865 and 1866, then of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1867. He travels to Italy, where he paints his Grande Nef de Saint-Marc, which is purchased by King Leopold II. Too young to win a medal at the Brussels Salon, Émile Wauters was sent by the Minister of Fine Arts as artist-delegate to Suez for the inauguration of the canal. Initially a history painter, his great talent for portraiture, especially of women, earned him commissions from all over the world. A member of the major Academies, he was awarded the highest distinctions in Belgium, France and Germany. Artist listed with Bénézit, Arto and Piron, Coté Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc....

History of our Study: In 1870, Émile Wauters exhibited his great historical painting Marie de Bourgogne Implorant les Magistrats de Gand la Grace de ses Conseillers Hugonet et d'Humbercourt, which astonished with the great mastery of this young artist, an impression confirmed the following year at the London International Exhibition. Two years later, he presented Folie de Hugo van der Goes at the 1872 Brussels Salon, which was a real success. The Belgian State purchased both works, the first for the Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain de Liège and the second for the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. The city of Brussels, wishing to enrich its collection with a work by the young triumphator, asked him to decorate the Grand Staircase of the Lions at City Hall. There were two large walls on which the artist would trace the memory of two glorious pages in Brussels' communal history. Wauters painted Marie de Bourgogne Jurant de Respecter les Privilèges de la Commune and Les Bruxellois en Armes réclamant la Charte au duc Jean IV de Brabant, both completed in 1878. Wauters went to the Musée de la Porte de Hal in Brussels to paint this study of the Missel, which will be depicted on the final painting (see photos).
