Born Gastão Simões da Fonseca on October 16, 1874 in Rio de Janeiro and died on June 18, 1943 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, was a Franco-Brazilian painter and illustrator.
Gaston Simoes de Fonseca completed all his studies in France. A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he left after graduation for Greece, where he discovered ancient sites and took part in excavation campaigns with archaeologists from the École Française d'Athènes. During his stay in the country, he produced a large number of reproduction plates of anthropomorphic vases and craters for the Louvre Museum. Naturalized as a French citizen in 1904, Gaston Simoes de Fonseca exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1906 on his return to France, where he was awarded the bronze medal in 1913. He also worked as a draughtsman and restorer at the Louvre. Between the wars, from 1920 to 1939, he painted portraits of a number of political and artistic figures. He exhibited regularly at the Galerie Barreiro, 30 rue de Seine, as well as at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne. In 1939, he produced a series of charcoal and red chalk projects for religious settings, and also undertook numerous projects for bas-reliefs, sculptures and fountains.
