Antique Italian Painting The Way Of The Cross From The 17th Century
Antique Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a religious subject, a Station of the Cross, of good pictorial quality. A large, impactful painting, ideal for antique dealers and collectors of ancient religious paintings. It depicts Christ crowned with thorns in the center, intent on lifting the cross.
All around, various figures heighten the drama of the scene. We find a Roman soldier in the upper right near Mary and other figures. Just above Christ, a man appears to be helping Jesus; he could therefore be Simon of Cyrene (the Cyrenian), the protagonist of the fifth Station of the Cross. The figure of the tormentor on the left, depicted tormenting Christ, is both formidable and well-presented (see photo).
A large painting that has undergone extensive conservative restoration, including relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in several areas (see photo). The painting is overall in fair condition with visible signs of restoration.
