Drawing size: 28 × 22 cmDimensions with frame: 52.5 × 46.5 cm

Description

A striking, immediate study capturing the raw energy of laughter. With a few confident, quick strokes, Karl Hubbuch builds up the face and upper body, conveying movement, tension and emotion with remarkable economy.

The wide-open mouth, contracted facial muscles and vigorous line work give the figure an almost cinematic vitality.

A major figure of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement in Germany, Hubbuch was known in the 1920s for his incisive observation of human behavior and sharp graphic language.

This drawing exemplifies the directionality, psychological intensity and modern sensibility that characterize his works on paper from the Weimar period.

ProvenanceGalerie Éditions Karl Flinker, Paris (complete label on reverse, with title "Rire", date 1926, dimensions and technique).

Karl Flinker's Paris gallery played a major role in promoting postwar European avant-garde artists.

The works bearing his label enjoy a distinguished provenance that is particularly appreciated by collectors.

This drawing bears the label of the gallery that organized, in 1984, the important retrospective exhibition Karl Hubbuch : peintures, aquarelles, dessins, gravures des années 20 et 30 (March 15 - May 5, 1984), devoted precisely to works on paper and paintings from this emblematic period.

Condition

Excellent condition, typical of the artist's drawings on paper from this period.

Mounted and framed with care.

Great example of Hubbuch's expressionist and psychological vein, perfectly representative of the German New Objectivity. Ideal for a collector of 1920s German art or avant-garde works on paper.
