Louis Gauffier 1762-1801 After Jean-germain Drouais (1763-1788),marius Prisoner At Minturnes
Artist: Louis Gauffier 1762-1801
Louis GAUFFIER 1762-1801 after Jean-Germain Drouais (1763-1788), Marius made prisoner at Minturnes, oil on original canvas, former Ulysse Moussalli collection 1899-1989, period frame to his measure dim: 49x61cm
Marius prisoner at Minturnes(also titled Marius at Minturnes) is a history painting painted in 1786 by Jean-Germain Drouais. It depicts the attempted execution of consul Caius Marius, a prisoner at Minturnes.
The protagonist is Roman general and consul Caius Marius, whose life Plutarch in the Parallel Lives or Lives of Illustrious Men recounts. Jean-Germain Drouais has chosen the decisive moment of a more or less legendary episode set in 88 BC, at the end of his life. Proscribed by his political enemies in the Senate, the old consul fled Rome, only to be taken prisoner near the town of Minturnes and placed under house arrest. With its austere theme painted in the neo-classical manner of the School of David, the painting pays homage to the Serment des Horaces by his master Jacques-Louis David. The painting is part of the Musée du Louvre's collection of paintings.
Our painting is a superb replica of the Louvre painting of the period, but there is no proof that it is by Drouais, but it looks like it might rather be by Louis GAUFFIER, a friend and admirer of Drouais!
Louis Gauffier and Jean Drouais were two 18th-century French artists, both winners of the Prix de Rome in 1784.
Gauffier, born June 10, 1762 in Poitiers, enjoyed a flourishing career in Rome, where he painted such notable works as "The Prediction of Samson's Birth" and "Jacob and Laban's Daughters". Drouais, born in 1763, was also a favorite pupil of JacquesLouis David and shared the prize with Gauffier.
Their work reflects the neoclassical style, and their journey in Rome was marked by political events, notably the riots of 1793 that forced them to take refuge in Florence.
Our painting is a rediscovery, one of the finest replicas of the original painting.
