L'art de guérir par le barbier-chirurgien - Oil on panelpanel - Flemish school, late 17th century

Remarkable oil on wood panel depicting a medical genre scenein the great tradition of 17th-century Flemish painting.century Flemish painting. In a modest interior with walls lined with flasks and aand a pinned leaf (with the date 1660), a barber-surgeon with a colorful facesurgeon performs a bloodletting on a seated patient, leaning his right arm on a cane.his right arm on a cane, his head bandaged with a white cloth. A bowlis placed on a nearby table. A femaleobserves the scene from the background. The overall effect is one of warm chiaroscurowarm chiaroscuro, with a palette of golden browns enhanced by red, typical of Flemish genre masters.

This small format on panel is fully in keeping with the traditiontradition of the medical genre scenes so popular in 17th-century Flanders,of David Teniers le Jeune (1610-1690) and Adriaen van Ostadevan Ostade (1610-1685), undisputed masters of these playlets of popular lifetinged with satirical humor.Beautiful modern frame in the taste of the period.

Good overall condition for age. A clearly visible crack on thehas been restored to the paint. The same crackthe rear. This does not detract from the paintwork.
