Romanian Traditional Costume Skirt - Late 19th Century (oltenie / Wallachia)
Romanian traditional costume skirt - late 19th century (Oltenie / Wallachia)
Antique skirt belonging to a Romanian women's traditional costume, dating from the late 19th century. This piece, called catrință or fota, was worn on special occasions: religious feasts, ceremonies and weddings.
It is distinguished by a very graphic and elegant composition, alternating black and red panels, enhanced by a rich applied braid decoration with golden highlights. The central motif, with its curved, symmetrical lines, testifies to refined textile craftsmanship and an aesthetic typical of the regions of southern Romania (Oltenie / Wallachia).
Made from a supple silk/cotton blend, the skirt features a gathered waist and a fullness, offering a fluid yet structured fall. The decoration, sewn rather than directly embroidered, illustrates the evolution of textile techniques at the end of the 19th century, with the introduction of high-quality manufactured braids.
An authentic and expressive piece, both ethnographic and decorative, ideal for collectors, lovers of antique textiles or interior staging.
Condition: good overall condition for its age
Period: late 19th century
Origin: Romania (Oltenie / Wallachia)
Dimensions:
Height: 84 cm
Width of skirt bottom: 112 cm
A strong piece, steeped in history, emblematic of Eastern European sartorial traditions.
