His so-called "pouf" hairstyle was very popular from 1774 to 1780.

Pierre-Servais Nicolet was a French painter of the second half of the XVIII century, active in Paris where he was a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc. He was accepted there in 1764 on presentation of his Sacrifice to Ceres and exhibited regularly at the Salon of this Academy in 1764 and 1774, when he was considered assistant to professor.
This portrait is reproduced in Neil Jeffares' "Dictionary of pastellists before 1800".
