Henri Marie-rose (1922-2010) - Head Of An African Woman, Stone Sculpture
Stone sculpture of an African woman's head, by sculptor and painter Henri Marie-Rose (1922-2010). African woman's head, stone sculpture
Born in Le François, Martinique, the artist's remarkable career took him between France and the United States. Trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris between 1945 and 1952 on a French government scholarship, he developed a solid technical mastery and a personal artistic language there, which won him several awards.
In the United States, he worked as a sculptor for a number of years.
Insettled in San Francisco in 1953, he pursued an active career as a sculptor and teacher, exhibiting throughout California and the United States. His work was notably the subject of a solo exhibition at the De Young Museum in 1960. He also participated in the dissemination of sculpture through educational broadcasts and an enduring commitment to art education.
This sculpture, carved directly from stone, bears witness to his attachment to raw material and the tradition of direct carving. The refined treatment of volumes and the expressive power of the face reflect a sensibility that is both modern and deeply rooted in a search for identity and form.
A genuine work of art by a sculptor.
An authentic work by a still confidential but sought-after artist, at the crossroads of European, Caribbean and American cultures.
