Giuseppe Varotti - Bologna - Monochrome Oil On Paper - The Judgment Of Solomon - 18th Century
Giuseppe Varotti (Bologna, 1715 -1780)
The Judgment of Solomon
Monochrome oil on paper mounted oncardboard, 38.3 x 51.6 cm.
This monochrome should be viewed inrelation to one of the most important works in the artist’s catalog. Thepainting is, in fact, a preparatory study for The Judgment of Solomon, which is part ofthe collections of the Opera Pia dei Poveri Vergognosi in Bologna. The correct attribution ofthe aforementioned work to Giuseppe Varotti is relatively recent, as, until the1935 exhibition on 18th-century Bologna, it was still attributed to ErcoleGraziani (1688–1765). This is one of the many erroneous attributionsof which Varotti was a victim during the years of his obscurity. This oil on paper belongs to theearly phase of the artist’s career.
