Math Moreau, Mary Stuart, H73cm, Bronze Signed, 19th Century

Artist: Mathurin Moreau 1822-1912
Large bronze sculpture with brown patina, depicting Mary Stuart: a young woman in elegant, refined attire, lace and jewels. She holds a feather and a letter in her hand, resting on a pedestal casket with a baby.

The artist, Mathurin Moreau, signed the sculpture on the base.

Marie Stuart (1542-1587) was a Scottish queen whose life was marked by political intrigue and religious conflict. Having become Queen of Scots only days after her birth, she was sent to France, where she was educated to become Queen of France, following her marriage to Francis II. After her husband's death, she returned to Scotland, where the country was divided between Catholics and Protestants.
Her reign was unstable: she remarried several times, notably to Lord Darnley, whose assassination weakened her politically. Accused of involvement in the murder and faced with revolts, she was forced to abdicate in favor of her son.
She fled to England, hoping for the support of her cousin Elizabeth I. But the latter considered her a threat to the kingdom. But the latter considered her a threat to the throne and had her imprisoned for almost 20 years: finally, accused of conspiracy, Mary Stuart was condemned to death and executed in 1587.
Marie Stuart would become a legendary figure as a martyred queen with a tragic destiny, a symbol of feminine heroism, and would be represented in all artistic currents, such as painting, poetry and sculpture.

Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) was one of the greatest French sculptors of the XIXᵉ century, famous for his decorative works.
The son of a sculptor, he studied in Paris and won the Prix de Rome. He created numerous statues, fountains and ornaments that can be seen in many cities in France and abroad.
His elegant, academic style was in keeping with the artistic tradition of his time.
Today, his works are still widely sought-after and even exhibited in Museums
