Large Sculptural Brutalist Black Ceramic Vase, Signed Studio Piece, 1970s.

This large sculptural ceramic vase is a powerful testament to the brutalist aesthetic that swept through decorative arts and studio pottery in the 1960s and 1970s. Deliberately moving away from classic utilitarian pottery, the artist presents a true abstract work of art. They have utilized the clay to create a piece with a strong architectural presence, evoking the raw power of primitive elements or ancient steles.

With its impressive height of 38.5 cm, the piece surprises with its flattened profile and small, constricted neck. The true power of the work lies in its surface treatment: the ceramic is covered in a rough, matte black glaze that absorbs the light. The main facade is animated by a masterful applied relief decoration. This vertical, almost totemic motif mixes striated textures, raw geometric blocks, and a series of small circular indentations that give rhythm to the composition. The piece bears an incised signature, guaranteeing its authenticity as a unique studio creation.

Offered in excellent vintage condition, this vase is a piece with a radical and assertive character. It will stand out as a true sculpture within a contemporary, minimalist, or wabi-sabi interior, ideally placed on a modernist sideboard or in a clean-lined alcove.
