Despite extensive research, the use of this wooden pot, which likely dates back to the end of Catherine II of Russia's reign, remains a mystery. While it was certainly used in the kitchen, as evidenced by the brass drip tray at the bottom, its material precludes it from being used for cooking. Its rich decoration, along with its small display stand, makes it suitable for table use. We therefore consider it a serving dish, perhaps a vegetable dish, intended for holding foods that produced enough steam to require a receptacle at the bottom. Is the learned owl, which serves as both a handle and adorns the lid, a clue? Is it a Russian pun?

Despite all these questions, this covered dish, in its current condition, has undergone standard restoration, but remains a very fine piece of carved wood.
