Directoire Period Mahogany and Flamed Cuban Mahogany Tronchin Table, c. 1795-1799

This architect’s table, known as a Tronchin table, embodies the ingenuity and elegance of late 18th-century French furniture. Crafted in mahogany and flamed Cuban mahogany veneer, it combines functionality with refined aesthetics. Its adjustable top, covered in light blue leather with gold leaf decoration, tilts to the desired angle via a hidden rack-and-pinion mechanism, ensuring ergonomic comfort for seated or standing work.

The table features a drawer in the apron, revealing a sliding writing compartment complete with an original inkwell and pen tray. Two lateral pull-out extensions enhance its versatility, while its tapered legs, ending in gilt-bronze sabots and casters, provide both stability and mobility.

Origin and Innovation
Inspired by the work of Geneva physician Théodore Tronchin (1709–1781), this table addressed an early concern for ergonomic health, aiming to prevent posture-related pain. Its adjustable, tiltable top—operated by an internal rack system—made it a groundbreaking piece for its time.
