Pastel By Jacques Weismann
Pastel depicting a nude woman lying in bed signed Jacques Weismann, born Jacques Auguste Weismann on September 18, 1878 in Paris and died on July 21, 1962 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, was a French painter, pastellist, illustrator and sculptor. He was the son of Théophile Gottlieb Weismann and Emma Pauline Koenigswerther. He married Marthe Bickart on May 7, 1908.
Jacques Weismann is a pupil of Fernand Cormon, Paul-Émile Boutigny and Ferdinand Humbert[]. From 1905, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, winning the silver medal in 1923 and the gold medal in 1932[]. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1930[].
He exhibited his portraits, pastels and paintings notably at the Salon des indépendants, Salon d'automne, Salon d'hiver, Maison des Artistes du 152, Boulevard Haussmann in Paris and Galerie Simonson[]. Among his best-known works are the portraits of Maréchal Foch painted in 1921, exhibited at the Palais du Luxembourg, that of General Gouraud, as well as those of stars of the chanson of the period such as Tino Rossi, whose portrait he exhibited in 1937 and that of Jeanne Aubert in 1939.
He again participated in the Salon des Artistes Français on May 17, 1940. It's probably following the promulgation of the Vichy regime's discriminatory statute against Jews that we lose track of him that year, and find one of his works signed under the name Jack Weiz, "jeune femme au lever à la lueur de la bougie'.
He was a long-time resident of 11, boulevard Pereire in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
