This important oil painting on canvas depicts the Gospel episode of the "Tribute to Caesar," taken from the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke, famous for the phrase "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
The scene unfolds behind a stone parapet, which also features the initials HB f. (fecit), a compositional device that symbolically separates the sacred space from that of the spectator, while simultaneously engaging them in the narrative. The figure of Christ dominates the center, rendered with great elegance and naturalness, wrapped in a luminous robe in rosy tones that enhances his scenic and spiritual presence.
Around him are Pharisees, priests, and popular figures, characterized by a deliberately differentiated rendering: on one side, the composed and idealized beauty of Christ, on the other, a more pronounced, almost caricatural, representation of his interlocutors. The faces, expressions, and accentuated gestures hark back to the vein of 17th-century Venetian painting that favored expressive freedom, irony, and distortion as narrative tools.
Stylistically, the work reveals a broad and international figurative culture: influences from Rembrandt-inspired Flemish painting are evident in the darker, more introspective figures, Nordic accents in the physiognomic distortion, and a rich, typically Venetian palette in the rendering of the fabrics. The composition is thus dynamic, theatrical, and highly communicative.
