Daum Nancy Miniature Opalescent Covered Pot - Hen Décor - Fables La Fontaine 19th Century
Opalescent glass miniature jar with enameled decoration and gold fillets, on an acid-frosted background.
It is signed Daum Nancy with Lorraine cross, 1880-1890s production.
Hand-painted animal decoration in grisaille, depicting a hen, typical of the rural and narrative scenes mentioned in Daum - Mastery of Glass (p.120), where early Daum pieces were inspired by the world of La Fontaine's Fables (perhaps "La Poule aux œufs d'or").
Original gilding, matching original lid, finely executed decoration. Early Daum piece, pre-dating Art Nouveau creations. One handle missing, some wear to the gilding (see photos).
