Aubusson Tapestry: The Conversion Of Saint Paul, Late 17th - Early 18th Century

Tapisserie d'Aubusson, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, illustrates with exceptional narrative and decorative richness the biblical episode of the Conversion of Saint Paul on the Road to Damascus. At the heart of the composition, Saint Paul is depicted knocked off his mount, struck blind by divine power. The scene is enlivened by the presence of horsemen, soldiers and set against an idealized architectural landscape, testifying to a remarkable vivacy.

The tapestry is distinguished by the finesse of its design, the richness of its chromatic palette and the superior quality of its execution, characteristics emblematic of the major productions of the Aubusson manufactures of this period. The work is framed by an elegant flower garland border, typical of the decorative taste of the period, which confers a harmonious balance between narrative and ornamentation. Signed in the lower center by Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, with mention of lissier Dessartaux, this tapestry attests to high-quality production from a recognized workshop.

The dimensions are 285 × 480 cm. Please note, the tapestry shows wear, old restorations and strips of canvas on the reverse, which are marks of its history and authenticity.
