Marie Joseph Georges Goursat dit Sem, born November 22, 1863 in Périgueuxand died November 24, 1934 in Paris, was a French illustrator, poster artist, caricaturist, society columnist and writer.Marie Joseph Georges Goursat was the son of André Goursat, a merchant and president of the Périgueux Commercial Court, and Claire Marie Philippine Saint-Martin.

Throughout his life, Sem provided graphic responses to a variety of communication situations, ranging from the press to advertising, via the creation of albums that would become his trademark. He accompanied the mutation of media at the turn of the century, renewing the life of images, creating and using new practices, multiplying image supports such as point-of-sale advertising. With a creative appetite that doesn't shy away from applied arts - plastic arts boundaries, he contributes to the rise of new uses, accompanying the beginnings of what will become visual communication. From this point of view, he belongs entirely to his era, which at the turn of the century was attempting to synthesize the arts and bring industry and artistic expression together.

Sem became a Parisian in 1900, he was thirty-seven years old and had perfectly mastered his style; his signature was fixed, Georges Goursat became Sem, in homage to Amédée de Noé dit Cham whose work he admired. If he moves away from the satirical tradition and the master Cham, it's for an original treatment of caricature, halfway between in situ portraiture and portrait charge. A highly legible synthetic representation: flat tones of color framed by black, use of colored backgrounds with the character in the foreground, form an effective and aesthetic vocabulary. Flat tints of color and nervous contour lines will gradually replace the Lilliputian characters with giant heads, inherited from the caricature tradition.
