Sea Coconut On Base

Coco de Mer on a custom-made stand.

The Coco de Mer is the palm that produces the largest coconuts in the world. It grows exclusively on the islands of Curieuse and Praslin, in the Seychelles.

The Coco de Mer's place of growth was only discovered in 1768 by a French expedition. Before that, its origin was a mystery. One hypothesis was that it came from an unknown palm tree growing at sea, hence its name Coco de Mer or sea coconut.

This somewhat erotically shaped fruit was once associated, in its scientific name, with a woman's buttocks. Lodoicea callypige, where the species name "cally-pige" means "beautiful buttocks" in ancient Greek.

The Coco de Mer is a rare and protected species, classified since 2007 on the IUCN Red List as "endangered". Since it is forbidden to export them from the Seychelles, they are all the more sought-after and it is rare to find them in Europe.
