In pristine original condition, this rare depiction of Saint Melange, reclining in a summer glade, blesses a group of rabbits with her left hand. Legend, dating back to the 7th century, tells of Melange as a nun living in the wilderness of the kingdom of Powys, where she became the supernatural protector of rabbits and hares against hunters and their hounds. Presented in an exquisite and original handmade frame with gilt panels decorated with foliage and berries, adorned with turquoise discs. Signed and dated 1884. Dimensions: 68.5 x 51 cm
