André Strauss (1885-1971):
A student of Ernest Laurent, André Strauss debuted at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1908. He won a gold medal there, as well as the Corot Prize in 1925, quickly establishing his place in the French art scene between the two World Wars. A founding member of the Salon des Tuileries, he also exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, becoming a member in 1930. His career took on an international dimension through his participation in several group exhibitions, notably at the Venice Biennale, as well as in Copenhagen, Berlin, Cairo, Tokyo, New York, Brussels, and San Francisco. Strauss also created important public decorations, including the decorative panels for the reception hall of the Perros-Guirec town hall. Primarily a landscape painter, he remained attached to A sensitive naturalism, favoring the careful observation of light and atmospheric variations. Recognized by his peers and by institutions, he was appointed an officer of the Legion of Honour in 1937.
