Cup Bearer, Yoruba People, Benin 01
This small offering cup is unusual not only for its small size but also for the movement of the woman's head. She is kneeling and holds a cup in her hands. This cup is decorated with a zigzag frieze. Her elaborate ogival hairstyle contributes to the movement of her head. Her cheeks bear the traditional scarifications of the Yoruba people. A triangular decoration also adorns her upper back. The aesthetic quality of the carving is remarkable.
This cup is a beautiful testament to Yoruba refinement.
