Alexandre Falguiere (1831-1900) - Bronze Bust Of Diana The Huntress
Important bronze bust of Diana the Huntress with its beautiful original brown patina, signed A. Falguière on the left shoulder and bearing the Thiebaut Frères Paris foundry mark on the back. It rests on a Belgian red griotte marble pedestal. Model created in 1882. Very good condition. Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900), a prodigious sculptor of the Belle Époque, was born in Toulouse. He studied drawing in Paris with Carrier-Belleuse and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1854 in the studio of François Jouffroy. He debuted at the Salon in 1857 and won the Prix de Rome in 1859 with "Mezentius Wounded." He then spent five years at the French Academy in Rome and sent several of his works to the Salon. In 1868, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his "Tarcicius."
