Pair Of Gilt Bronze And Patinated Candlesticks, 19th Century, Signed Ferdinand Levillain

Artist: Ferdinand Levillain
Two unique bronze candlesticks in the Napoleon III style, dating from the late 19th century and made by the French sculptor Ferdinand Levillain. Their amphora-shaped bodies are decorated with mythological scenes in relief – centaur motifs and figurative compositions typical of classical iconography. The tall, graceful stem extends into a complex four-branched design, embellished with vegetal motifs, scrolls, and rocaille elements. The handles, adorned with stylized animal heads and rich ornamentation, lend the objects an expressive and luxurious sculptural dimension. The whole rests on an elegant, profiled marble base, supported by bronze feet in the form of lion's paws. The inscription "F. Levillain" (Ferdinand Levillain) is visible on one of the candlesticks.
Ferdinand Levillain (1837-1905) was a French sculptor and master bronze worker active in the second half of the 19th century. He collaborated closely with the renowned Parisian foundry Barbedienne, where he realized many of his decorative art projects. Levillain's works are characterized by great technical mastery, detailed reliefs, and antique iconography – mythological scenes, figures, and allegories are frequently depicted. His work reflects the taste of the Napoleonic era: luxury, eclecticism, and interpretations of historical styles.
