Italian School, Saint Francis of Paola, oil on canvas. Hermit, founder of the Order of Minimis, patron of Calabria and sea people, sanctified by Pope Leo X in 1516, celebrated in Paola, his birth place, is painted in an architectural niche. He wears a dark coat and according to traditional iconography he holds himself up on a long stick, his eyes looking up. A flying angel wearing a colourful cloack hands him a disc with the inscription Charitas, attibute of the Minimis Order. Signature and date illegible bottom right. An illegible inscription on the plinth. Relined, very good condition. About 1750.
