Oil On Panel By Ulrico Schettini 1959 (abstraction - Dadaism - Neo Dada...)
Artist: Ulrico Schettini
Oil on panel by Ulrico Schettini, known as Montefiore, signed and dated 1959. Note: original holes are present on the panel. Ulrico Schettini was born in Cosenza, Italy. After studying art in Pesaro, Paris, and Rome, he settled in England in the late 1950s. In the 1960s and early 1970s, he taught at Hull College of Arts and Crafts, Carlisle College of Art and Design, Hornsea College of Art, the City Literary Institute, and King's College London. He worked in New York in 1964 and, from 1966 to 1971, gave annual lectures in the United States under the auspices of the Association of American Colleges. During this period, he exhibited frequently in London galleries, such as the Drian Gallery, and in other parts of France. His first retrospective, held at the Hull Municipal Art Gallery in 1968, attracted international attention. It was at this time that he adopted the stage name "Montefiore." A major exhibition of his work took place at the Café Royal in London in 1972, followed by an even more significant one at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan in 1974. Montefiore returned to live in Italy in the 1970s. His work, resolutely modernist and abstract since the 1950s, underwent a radical evolution in the 1980s. He turned to a wider variety of media: stained glass, metals, and ceramics, in addition to painting—and moved from abstraction to figurative art.
