Pair Of Theatre Sets By Félix Labisse
Pair of gouaches, Theater sets, gouaches on paper.
Félix Labisse (1905-1982) was born in Marchiennes (Nord). He was deeply influenced by his stay in Ostend in 1922 and his encounter with James Ensor. From 1927 onwards, he was a regular visitor to Ostend's artistic circles, where he rubbed shoulders with Léon Spilliaert and Constant Permeke, among others.
From 1932 onwards, he made several trips to Paris, where he became friends with Robert Desnos, Jacques Prévert, and Antonin Artaud. It was during this period that he became involved in the world of live performance and went on to create more than sixty sets for the theater.
Close to the spirit of surrealism, his unique and prolific work had a lasting impact on 20th-century art.
