Sterling Silver Tea Caddy – George III – London 1765
Superb English sterling silver (925/1000) cylindrical tea caddy, George III period.
An iconic piece from the mid-18th century, cylindrical in shape (canister or straight barrel type), with a removable pull-off lid surmounted by an elegant chased silver spherical finial.
The body is entirely decorated in repoussé and chased with a magnificent late Rococo floral motif: central blooming roses in high relief, surrounded by sinuous leaves, intertwined stems, flower buds, and stylized foliage.
This abundant and naturalistic decoration is typical of London tea caddies of the 1760s, influenced by Rococo but adapted to refined English taste.
Some minor scratches and dents consistent with over 260 years of history.
Dimensions:
Total height (with lid): 14 cm;
Diameter: 8.5 cm;
Weight: approx. 275 g.
Hallmarks:
Lion passant (sterling silver guarantee),
crowned leopard head (London office),
date letter "k" for 1765,
maker's mark IS.IL to be determined (probably a collaboration between two goldsmiths).
Condition: Very good – excellent for the period, with no deformation or excessive wear to the decoration. 1 small cut on the rim about 5 mm.
