Bronze sculpture of a miner with a shovel, signed Emile Carlier. Emile Joseph Nestor Carlier (1849-1927) studied at the Academies of Cambrai and Valenciennes, then under Jouffroy, Cavalier, and Chapu at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He debuted at the Salon in 1875, won a gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, and received medals of honor in Antwerp and Amsterdam. Many of his bronze works depict allegories, genre scenes, and busts. Several of these pieces are held in museums in Bordeaux, Lyon, and Paris, including the Petit Palais and Palais Garnier.
