Reliquary – True Cross Of Our Lord Jesus Christ – Rock Crystal Relic

Mid-19th century France. Rare devotional reliquary presented in a circular frame of molded and gilded wood. The interior, protected by antique glass, reveals a carefully crafted composition on a background of pinkish-beige moiré silk. At the center is a rock crystal reliquary cross containing a fragment presented as being from the True Cross. The relic is held in place by an antique wire mount, punctuated with small beads. The whole is set within an oval frame of cannetille, a delicate work characteristic of 19th-century convent production. The upper part is decorated with a radiating motif set with glass cabochons. The field is punctuated by stamped decorative elements – foliage, small flowers, and metal discs – arranged with symmetry and balance. Below the cross hangs a red ecclesiastical wax seal, attached directly to the mount, guaranteeing the antiquity of the seal. The reverse is closed by antique paper showing the normal signs of age. The base appears to have been reattached at some point in the past, without any alteration to the internal assembly. The wooden frame has been restored (cracks).
