Surjoug Haute-garonne
Soubrejoug or Surjoug.
France, Haute-Garonne.
19th century.
This piece of wood, adorned with a small bell, was an object of pride for the peasant who placed it on the yoke of his team of horses when he went to market or to the landowner to deliver his share of the harvest. Originally, the soubrejoug imitated the church steeples of the Gers, Save, and Garonne valleys, where it is found almost exclusively. Its function was to signal the arrival of the team of horses and to protect the animals from lightning.
