Warwick Bronze Vase Signed Barbedienne, 19th Century
Artist: Ferdinand Barbedienne
Warwick bronze vase with a nuanced brown patina, signed by the prestigious Parisian founder Ferdinand Barbedienne, 19th century. The monumental ancient marble vase from which our vase was made was discovered in 1771 in the villa of Emperor Hadrian in Rome by Gavin Hamilton. After meticulous restoration under the expert eye of Piranesi, it was acquired by the Earl of Warwick (from whom it takes its name) and is currently housed in the prestigious Burrell Collection in Glasgow. Due to its provenance, its Bacchic motifs, and its lines, this vase quickly became a benchmark of Roman antiquity, inspiring the most talented artists of the 19th century, notably Ferdinand Barbedienne, who signed our vase with remarkable skill.
